Republic Polytechnic’s very own Service Learning Club (SLC) was invited as one of the many guests of honours to Marsiling CSSP’s (Community Safety & Security Program) soft launch of their newest project for 2010. This event was called ‘EYES’ (Elderly in Your EState) Ambassador Project.
The ‘EYES’ Ambassador project plans to ensure that the senior citizens in the neighborhood are aware of the safety measures that they can equip themselves with. Hopefully once they are equipped with these safety measures, they will be able to keep themselves safe from falling prey to crime.
Members of the SLC were honored as the ‘EYES’ Ambassador for this new project and as ambassadors, they will be given the opportunity to reach out to the senior citizens and educate them of the safety measures and basically how they can protect themselves from crime.
Seated among the guests were the students of Woodlands Secondary School, members from the Health Promotion Board, Singapore Customs and National Crime Prevention Council.
Guest of honor, Mr Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Manpower and Health and MP for Sembawang GRC, highlighted what he expects of the student ambassadors. “The student ambassadors’ role in this program is to remind senior citizens and their family about measures to keep them safe from crimes. If each ambassador reaches out to 10 senior citizens, it assures me that they would reach out to 10 more of their neighbors or friends”.
Mr. David Soh, organizer of the ‘EYES’ project, outlined how each ambassador would be prepared before they are to handhold the seniors. “Training will be provided on the basics of safety and crime prevention to the students first before we allow them to do the quarterly house visit. This is so that students are prepared to answer any of the senior citizens’ questions. By June, we hope to have fully geared the students when they go out to play their part”.
‘EYES’ Ambassador project will be done throughout the year, enabling the ambassadors to be more prepared to be involved in such a huge project. SLC would not have it any other way and is delighted to be part of the project.
This year long project promises to develop each of our 36 students who are taking part in the project into a role model with knowledge and skills to give back the community. SLC is hopeful that the project will be a success.
